A clear guide to who can buy, where you can vape, and what stores check at the door or on delivery.
In Calgary, you must be 18 or older to buy vaping products. This comes from Alberta’s provincial law. Calgary also has a local bylaw that treats vaping like smoking in public places. Stores will check ID, and drivers may ask to see ID at the door for delivery orders.
When the law talks about vaping products, it covers devices (pods, pens, disposables), parts (coils, pods, chargers), and liquids (salt nic and freebase, with or without nicotine). If it is made for vaping, it sits under the same age rule: no sale to anyone under 18.
Calgary bans vaping in the same indoor public places where smoking is banned. That includes places like workplaces, restaurants, bars, and public buildings. The City also lists five-metre buffers at certain outdoor areas such as pools, skating rinks, playgrounds, skate parks, and sports fields. If you are near an entrance or a public space and you are not sure, step away or ask a staff member.
Calgary allows sampling inside standalone, enclosed vape shops. This does not make vaping legal for minors. It simply lets adult customers try a product indoors at a specialty shop. Sampling is not allowed in kiosks, restaurants, bars, or general retail.
Alberta law says shops cannot display vaping products in a way that lets customers view or handle them before purchase. This is why many stores keep items behind the counter or on covered shelves. Staff can show products when you ask, but you will not see a self-serve wall of devices or bottles.
Online orders follow the same age rule: 18+ only. Expect an ID check on delivery or pickup. If your order is for someone else, that person must be an adult and present with ID when the package arrives. If no one of age is home, the driver will follow the store’s return or re-delivery steps.
This is not an age rule, but it does affect what you can buy. Canada has a nationwide cap of 20 mg/mL nicotine for retail vaping products. Many lines also sell 0 mg. Ask staff to help you match strength to your device.
Can a parent buy for a minor? No. The law bans giving or selling vaping products to people under 18. Stores and drivers must refuse hand-offs to minors.
Can a minor work at a vape shop? Alberta guidance says someone under 18 can be employed at a retailer, but they still cannot legally use vaping products. Stores set their own hiring rules.
Can I vape in a park? Many outdoor public areas follow the same rules as smoking. Keep away from marked no-vaping zones and the five-metre buffers listed by the City.
Can I vape in my car? If a minor is in the vehicle, do not vape. If you are on private property and all occupants are adults, think about safety, smell, and local rules before you vape.
Do shops have to post signs? Yes. Provincial rules require clear “no sales to minors” signage at points of sale. If you do not see signs, staff still have to follow the law.
If you see vaping signs around a school or youth space, they are there to remind people that vaping is for adults only. If you find a device, many shops can tell you what it is so you can talk about it with facts. You can also read federal or provincial guides on youth and vaping for more background.
We serve adults only. In-store, we may ask for ID from anyone who looks under 25. For delivery or pickup, we may ask to see valid government ID at hand-off. If age cannot be confirmed, we cannot complete the sale. This protects our customers and keeps our store in line with the law.
Laws can change. If you need the most current wording or you have a special case, read the official provincial Act and the Calgary bylaw, or contact the City. We keep our store policies up to date with those sources.
Adults only. Vaping products may contain nicotine. Keep all items away from children and pets.
